How to Zero a Scope

A concise step-by-step guide with a recommended video walkthrough.

  1. Establish a safe range setup and confirm your firearm is unloaded until on the firing line.
  2. Start at a known distance (e.g., 25–50 m) to get on paper quickly.
  3. Use a solid rest or bipod and rear bag to minimise movement.
  4. Fire a 3–5 shot group. Measure the group’s centre relative to point of aim.
  5. Dial windage/elevation on the scope according to your click values to move point of impact toward point of aim.
  6. Repeat groups and corrections until centred. Then confirm at your desired zero distance (e.g., 100 m).
  7. Set or note your zero stop if your optic supports it. Record DOPE for later.
